Dublin Doubles is the third exhibition where Peter Morrens & Rik De Boe introduce the Belgian Artist Initiative VOORKAMER in which a gamut of International artists is presented with whom VOORKAMER worked during the last 17 years. The criteria the curators applied is simple; those artworks and artists are selected that broadly work with ideas of the double and the binary. Theirs will be a [visual] proposition to the question if they, as artistic leaders, will be perceived as curators rather than as artists. In a deliberate and emphatically disorientating way they use the context of the gallery space to determine how the project is presented. In Broadcast Gallery they will be presenting a cabinet of portable works by about 40 artists.

VOORKAMER is a Belgian artist-run space in Lier just outside Antwerp. It is situated in a large 17th-century historical site in the center of this old provincial town. On a yearly basis Voorkamer features a range of solo and group shows of contemporary visual artists from Belgium and abroad. Voorkamer presents a diverse view on what contemporary art could be and stimulates an active dialogue between the artists and the public. Voorkamer offers the possibility to the artist to work without any commercial pressure and offers the time and space to work on projects which would be harder to accomplish elsewhere.
Next to exhibitions in the Holy Ghoste site, Voorkamer organizes projects in the public space and teams up with other artist initiatives.

BROADCAST is a public gallery situated in the Fine Art department of the Dublin Institute of Technology.
The gallery supports the production, interpretation and dissemination of a broad range of activities within contemporary art practice, and creates a situation in which criticality can be integrated into the pedagogical development of fine art education. Programmed workshops and lectures run in correspondence with the concerns of the artist chosen to present work in the gallery, with a particular focus upon conceptual articulation of that work and the broader question of how artists occupy the space of research.

[Manœuvres] Voorkamer, Lier (B) 13/10 - 17/11/2013

Jesse Cremers (BE), Stefaan Dheedene (BE), Theo de Feyter (NL), Harmen de Hoop (NL), Andreas Exner (DE), Robert Otto Epstein (US), Benoît Felix (BE), Jerry Galle (BE), John Wood & Paul Harrison (UK), Jin-Kyoung Huh (KR), Indianen (BE), Tim Knowles (UK), Marijn van Kreij (NL), William Lamson (US), Bart Lodewijks (NL), Ane Mette Hol (NO), Tony Orrico (US), Alexandra Roozen (NL), Egill Sæbjörnsson (IS), Koen Sels (BE), David Shapiro (US), Helmut Smits (NL), Ante Timmermans (BE), Joris Van de Moortel (BE), Ger van Elk (NL), Kris Vleeschouwer (BE)

[Manoeuvres] brings together works that resulted from procedures the participating artists did not fully control. Against the grain of a romantic and subjective tradition that is still influential today, the artists consciously chose for a ‘mechanic’ mode of production that, to a certain extent, generates itself.

Instead of starting from a personal style or insights, the works apply all sorts of automatisms and compulsive strategies — ‘manoeuvres’ that work autonomously and engender a certain degree of objectivity. By partly distancing themselves from whatever the final result could be,  the artists ask questions about the laws inherent to the medium they work in, the way a work is received and the unconscious mechanisms that play a role in any production process.

The mechanical starting point of [Manoeuvres] thus takes on many different forms, but what connects the works presented, is that they proceed from random parameters that were decided on beforehand and weren’t abandoned afterwards. Drawings that were literally produced by a machine, copies of thoughtlessly drawn doodles, an installation that builds itself through breaking down, interventions in public space that are defined by the context in which they take place, or performative actions that are limited by what you can do with a body: cut loose from the artist’s subjective standpoint, all these works involuntarily explore their own limits in their own ways.

Opening:
Saturday Oct. 12 2013 from 8pm with actions by Tony Orrico, Ante Timmermans, & Joris Van de Moortel

Exhibition:
Oct. 13 till Nov. 17 2013, open Thu. - Sun.: 2pm - 6pm or by appointment

From May 21 until July 2, 2011, Voorkamer will be presenting “in- and outside - writing”, an exhibition exploring the area when writing and drawing are most closely related. At the centre of this exhibition is the OPAK research project of the same name, undertaken by the artists Kelly Chorpening, Rebecca Fortnum, Peter Morrens and Ans Nys, a joint venture between Sint-Lucas Fine Arts Ghent and University of the Arts London. During several sessions in the UK and Belgium, and via continuous correspondence of drawings, they have collaborated intensely over the past year. The exhibition will be co-curated by Voorkamer/Morrens & De Boe Productions and Marc Nagtzaam. Each of them complete the exhibition with a selection of relevant works. The research project will culminate with two publications later this year: an artists’ book, published by RGAP (UK), and a OPAK cahier, published by ACCO.
